president obama and his challenger governor romney squaring off in their first presidential debate. but take a look at the real clear politics average of the latest national polls. this, this is the gap that mitt romney has to close in the next five weeks if he is to win on november 6th. topping our political headlines right now, vice president joe biden is on the campaign trail in the critical swing state of florida. as we mentioned a few moments ago. he talked about the gop ticket in ft. myers. >> what they're doing these days, if you notice, they're not talking anymore more about what paul ryan and governor romney are really for. they're spending an awful lot of time telling you what we, barack obama and joe biden are against and what we've done. and they just attack everything. >> the republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan also has a very busy day. congressman ryan is going to have a rally in ohio in just a couple of hours. more on that in just a moment. this morning, though, he was in derry, new hampshire. >> all these promises were made in the idea of hope and change. and peo

now, we're counting down to tonight's presidential debate. mitt romney's motorcade just pulled up at the debate hall. president obama's expected to arrive in denver any minute as well. we'll be talking with top supporters of each candidate. the former new york city mayor rudy giuliani, he'll join us live this hour. also we'll be hearing from both candidates' wives in special cnn interviews. today, by the way, is the obama's 20th wedding anniversary. so what's it like spending the night with the romneys? i'm wolf blitzer, you're in "the situation room." >>> 34 days from the presidential election but much more importantly right now at least right now we've reached what may be the most decisive night of the 2012 campaign, the first presidential debate at the university of denver. after weeks of downplaying expectations, mitt romney's campaign insiders are finally opening up about what they really think can be accomplished tonight. cnn's national political correspondent jim acosta is in denver getting ready to set the scene. jim. >> reporter: wolf, the romney campaign sees the polls m

. romney must instead set the record straight in a presidential tone firm, respectful, but not deferential. joining me to talk about it from washington, richard goodstein, a democratic strategist who helped get al gore ready for the debates in 2000. on the phone from nebraska, brett o'donnell who is debate coach for mitt romney for part of the republican primary season. good afternoon to both of you gentlemen. >> good to be with you. >> let me start with you. tell me about the balance that romney has to strike, calling out, calling out president obama without appearing to be unfair or perhaps even nasty. >> well, i think it's all a matter of tone and language. and for governor romney, i would describe it as being respectfully but passionately aggressive. so in the way he refers to the president, referring to him as mr. president, with all due respect, but he also can't let that put him into a defensive posture where he doesn't -- i agree with karl rove, actually call out the president's policy. so i wouldn't phrase it as calling out the president, but calling out the president's policies.

. the problem for mr. romney, well, presidential elections are decided by electoral votes. and in that puzzle, mitt's chances are starting to crumble like a poorly constructed game of genga. it's still a close race in virginia and florida, with the president up by two in the old dominion. it's ohio with the president opening up a lead of eight points in the buckeye state, where voting is under way. with ohio joining pennsylvania, are iowa and new hampshire turning increasingly blue, that puts the president at 265 electoral votes. mitt romney would have to run the table of every other swing state to get to victory. and clearly, romney's so-called supporters are now reaching for desperate measures. >> on the eve of the first presidential debate, a bombshell is about to be dropped on the white house because tonight you'll hear from barack obama like you've never heard from him before. >> oh, yes, that was the introduction last night before fox aired tape of a 2007 speech by then-candidate obama to a group of black ministers in which he criticized the response to hurricane katrina and provided ce

of people forget mitt romney had 20 presidential debates under his belt in this past republican presidential primary, but barack obama, former law professor from harvard, does pretty well behind the podium. we'll know the answer about 11:00 eastern time tonight. >> you excited? >> i'm very excited. i'm up right now. it's 4:00 right now in denver. i'm not the only one up getting ready for tonight's debate. >> mark preston live for us in denver. thank you very much. >>> in tonight's debates some say you should look for quirks with candidates. to some viewers, delivery, tone, body language can be just as important as the substance of what some candidates say. when mitt romney is agitated, they say his arms apparently flail a bit. also president obama has an issue with long windedness. some debate watchers say that about him. both candidates seem to do well when they are standing behind podiums. so, i don't know, do you think it's going to be really crazy tonight? >> the super bowl of politics and happens only every four years. this is why we love it. >> a little confrontational. >>> in the next

as big a player in the presidential campaign than mr. bill clinton, bubba? well, both president obama and mitt romney spoke at the clion global initiativup inew york today anthat's ahead. ey're all genuflecting to the big guy, elvis. he's back. watching "hardball," the place for politics. >>> welcome back to "hardball. eada tli e thrghoud an global initiative up in new york, bill clinton is the man to see. he's so influential mitt romney took time away from the campaign trail to attend the meeting up there today. president obama, too, praised the former president. let's listen to president obama. ieip y f your extraordinary leadership, and i think i speak for the entire country when we say that you continue to be a great treasure for all of us. >>while r bill clinton mean for the 2012 election looking ahead for six weeks and beyond? john heilemann is new york magazine national affairs editor and an msnbc contributor. and i must give you congratulations, john. i was outherwithou, u maalrin e bo thicupour, count them, four emmys this weekend, this sunday night. we all watched. it must b

this is very confusing. is the romney campaign betting they can get through by just confusing the american public into submission? >> alex, if i were the kind of person who got depressed by a lack of specificity and seriousness in presidential politics i would be very depressed. this cycle you can judge? in different ways. the lack of specificity is ghouling for three reasons, two serious guys, two, the country has big challenges and three both campaigns are enunciated this principle on big important serious things, rather than have the candidate be specific at all about what they do, they say really it's better for the public to have this the rashed out with congress after i'm elected. the president says the same thing about social security reform. i find it unorthodox and maybe i need to cover a few more to cover the romney campaign, a major float of a proposal in a local television interview the day or two before the debate. seems like the $17,000 cap -- >> bucket. >> is actually, i think, an interesting idea, but it's not one that governor romney is apparently actually proposing and no

candidate appear more presidential? >> this is the ultimate test. whether mitt romney is standing next to president obama can convince the american people that they can envision him as president, and this is a delicate balancing act. it really affects how much candidates go on offense versus defense. the key is to be what might be called respectfully aggressive. to walk that line with -- when you are trying to attack and make a point that you don't overreach. that's the key question of the american people's mind. can this man, mitt romney, be president? how does he stand up next to a president on the stage? of course, president obama has a natural advantage in this because he is not running for president. he is president. >> all right. >> it is the key criteria, and campaigns shouldn't lose sight of that. >> we know this is a debates that revolves around domestic policy here. the other question is will mitt romney actually try to bring up libya into the debate because they've been so critical on the president? they think perhaps this is a weakness. >> it absolutely is. polls show it. w

-fi doble-gainer. >>> back to earth. francois hollande weighed in on the u.s. presidential race nde endse.lm coses here's what he said to reporters at the u.n. yesterday when asked if he knew about mitt romney's attacks on socialism. quote, yes, that's why i'll be careful not to say anying at all on this subject because as you'd imagine i a socialist supported one of these two candidates, that would cost him dear. so i suppose i should endorse mitt romney but i won't. finally talking to extremes, how did minnesota's lieutenant governorlon ramp up extra publicity for an event to help support military families? we'll call it a high-profile arrival. let's take a look. that's not on my bucket list. skydiving. lieutenant governor teamedp with a u.s. army parachute team to skydive at 120 miles per hour. anyway, from an altitude of about 130 13 sthou feet, right onto thene s cal nd she llow theive th a speech, encouraging people to support military families across the country. good for her. >>> up next, president obama's uptick in the polls is helping democratrun for office across the country. >

presidential debate moments. i can't wait. another one of our favorites "the cycle." >> if it's mitt romney first time at the rodeo i bet jennifer granholm thinks the president has an enormous advantage. >> the president is going to lose the first debate. he's just not a great debater. >> look whose feelings about barack obama came back to her. i guess what happened in charlotte stayed in charlotte. >> many american markets broke down, who jump started our engine? barack obama! when america needed him most, who got us rolling again on the road to recovery? >> let me ask you this, people! who couldn't get laid in a whorehouse with a fist fun of hundreds? barack obama. >>> americans are hoping for a few magic moments during the debate. we thought it was fun to look backwards and talk about our favorite debate moments throughout history. experts disagree how much the debates affect the voters. there's no question they shape how we recommend the elections. we all thought about this and came up with a signature moment from debates past. i'll lead it off. i had a lot that came to my mind, but one

. >> thank you. >> president obama and mitt romney will leave the campaign trail to their vice presidential picks. today vice president joe biden will be in north carolina and paul ryan takes a bus tour of iowa. president obama is working on his debate strategy in nevada taking time out to make some short campaign phone calls to supporters yesterday. mitt romney is prepping in denver. he squeezed in some final stomping yesterday along with former broncos quarterback john elway. >>> making headlines here at home, and around the world. marking 10 years since the dc snipers terrorized the region. for three weeks in october of 2002, police hunted a pair of shooters who killed 10 people and wounded three others. john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo were eventually caught and convicted for the shooting spree. the region will remember the victims of the attack on thursday, with a prayer vigil being held in gaithersburg. >>> a massive collision between an amtrak train and a big rig truck leaves nearly two dozen people injured. among them, a newborn baby. this happened in hanford california yester

believe in that larger idea of the narrative, what should the narrative be for romney tonight and should it be let's take this one great idea, pound it home as many times as you can or hope something sticks? >> no, the former. look, american presidential elections are usually decided on which candidate the public at large feels has the best vision of the future. our presidential elections are generally speaking, not about the past, but about the future. that's number one. so, in case of the narrative. number two, that we know that in politics as in so much else in life, after these debates are over, there will be a lot of people who can tell you specifically what any candidate said, but they will know how that candidate made them feel. so, the object and target for both candidates in the debates is for people to walk away feeling the person who handled it best. certainly people they want specifics, so governor romney, he needs to tell how with some detail his administration will be different from not just the obama administration, but from the president bush. with president obama, his ch

read so many stories now where republican or conservative commentators are saying well mitt romney can turn all of this around with the first presidential debate. has that happened in the past? what do you think? >> yeah, if you look historically -- i saw a statistic this morning that george bush was eight or nine points down going into his first debate with al gore. so i think in the past you had seen these are big moments for the campaign a chance for both candidates to stand on the same stage and be evaluated by the voters. if you listen to what they have been saying there was a report last week that mitt romney did five mock debates in a 48-hour period. he is a practiced debater. he did 20 debates during the primaries. he brags that he won 16 of them. so they see this as a big moment. so we're going to be prepared and i think he'll come in ready to fight and ready to try to make a change in the dynamic of this race. >> bill: i saw a report this morning where some of your colleagues are worried that because the president has so many presidential duties th
